Background:

Desborough School Founded in 1894 and is known as Maidenhead County Boys' Grammar School, it became a comprehensive school in 1973 and grant-maintained in January 1992. The original buildings, including the headmaster's house (now the music centre) have been extended, with new blocks in 1960, 1971 and 1972 and the Reynolds Technology Centre was opened in 1993. The main school building was renovated completely in summer 2005. The school provides various sports facilities such as gymnasium, sports hall, weather pitch, tennis courts, playing field and cricket Square. There is a language exchange programme with schools in Duisburg. There have been recent rugby tours to Canada, the United States and Ireland. Hockey is taught under the guidance of international player Mike Williamson (Wales and Hounslow), and the school won the county indoor hockey tournaments in 1993 and 1994. Saturday and weekday fixtures are held, often against independent schools, in hockey, rugby and cricket, while basketball, badminton and tennis are also offered. A student council was recently established with a delegated budget to improve facilities for the benefit of pupils. The school continues to be a boys 11-18 comprehensive school, maximises the potential of each individual, celebrate achievement in academic results, in effort and in behaviour. The school prepares pupils for life in society and assists the individual in developing a personal set of beliefs and values. It optimises pupil numbers.
