Background:

Established close to the River Loddon in 1950, Loddon Junior has developed from 'semi-rural' farmland surroundings into an urban school. Facilities on the 'extensive and attractive' grounds include an adventure playground, netball and football courts, and the school offers a main hall with stage and a 'well resourced' communications room with library and networked computers. The school claims to have been the first primary in the county to have a swimming pool built, and its maintenance is still fully funded by parents. There are 'simple, but positive' aims for the curriculum, designed to 'challenge pupils and prepare them for a multicultural, technological society'. A special needs department helps children with learning difficulties. The school hopes that parents will help at home with their children's reading and they are invited to come into school to assist with a wide range of activities, maintaining the 'close partnership' between home and school. Pupils can take part in inter-school sports matches, and drama and music are also promoted. The school choir has recorded a nationally transmitted BBC broadcast series, as well as performing regularly at school events. Children are encouraged to raise funds each week for a chosen charity.
