Background:

Newlands Girls' School originally founded as Maidenhead Girls' High School in 1905 by Miss Burn, the first headmistress, with 11 pupils. In 1907 the school moved to Castle Hill, by which time there were 40 girls and four staff. It took its first comprehensive intake in 1973 and the school was re-named Newlands. The school has now five computer rooms, a drama studio, a music block, a sports hall, gymnasium, a fitness room, a school library and a technology block. The library now stocks multi-media reference material in addition to books provides computer facilities and a careers database covering both careers information and materials about courses at colleges and universities. Sports teams have reached regional and national finals this year and the school has been awarded the Sportsmark and Artsmark. The school has five choirs and numerous instrumental groups. The school orchestra performs regularly in musical events throughout the year both in school and in the local community. The school aims to encourage every girl to fulfil their potential both within the classroom and beyond.
