Background:

Built in 1965, Whitchurch is a four-classroom school in a 'quiet, safe and beautiful' location. Two of the classrooms face the wooded slopes of Whitchurch Hill and are divided from the other classrooms by the school hall which functions as a gym, drama area, television and dining room. Bays around the hall house the school reference library, multi-media personal computer, musical instruments, physical education apparatus, humanities resource base and science area. 'Extensive' school grounds contain a netball court, football pitch, adventure area, natural wild area, pond and 'ample' open play areas. The pre-school is housed in a mobile classroom on the grounds. There are 'rewarding opportunities' for fieldwork studies through the immediate school environment, the local village and nearby River Thames. Through these, the children 'learn to understand key concepts across the whole spectrum of the curriculum'. Extra-curricular activities include music lessons and joint activities with other small schools in the Langtree Partnership. Whitchurch is also a member of Top Sport Scheme. An after-school club operates in the school hall from 3.30pm to 6pm, offering a series of sports, environmental studies and art and crafts. The school's community links are 'excellent', and the school association is 'very supportive'. Every week the children raise money at the tuckshop and select a charity each term to contribute to. The school is slightly over-subscribed.
