Background:

The school was founded in 1897 by the Sisters of the Bernardine Cistercian Order, whose origins date from beginning of Benedictine monasticism in the 6th century. The original building was built in the middle of the 19th century by Baroness Coutts, a friend of Queen Victoria, and acquired by Charles Hawtrey. A chapel was added to the house and Jesuits bought the building, adding the notable clock tower and a pseudo-Georgian extension. Increasing numbers in the early 1960s resulted in the addition of a science block, gymnasium, art and home economics room and the new hall. In 1989, when the school became co-educational, new facilities included a design and technology block, music suite, drama studio, additional science laboratory, general classrooms, and improved cloakroom and changing facilities. A wide variety of languages is taught, including French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Latin to A-level and Greek to GCSE. Specialist Humanities College Status from September 2004. Beacon Status; Artsmark Gold (2004); DfES Achievement Award. 'The school aims to provide a safe and secure environment in which each student will be happy and experience success'.
