Background:
The land for St Michael's was given in trust by the Marquis of Downshire and the Church built a school on it around 1866. The new buildings were built in 1962 and extended in 1975. Since the June 1996 Ofsted inspection this popular school has been 'almost rebuilt again' as every classroom has been enlarged, as have the computer room and administration area. The main catchment area is the Parish of Easthampstead, which consists of the estates of Easthampstead, Willridings, Great Hollands, Hanworth and Birch Hill. The school has a high percentage of musicians and is currently seeking funding for a performing arts centre. There is an 'extensive' extra-curricular timetable which includes a guitar ensemble, recorder, dance, craft clay, choir, football, table tennis and netball. All of these clubs are 'well supported and successful' and St Michael's were the Berkshire table tennis champions in 1999, and a pupil was English Schools champion. There are 'very strong' community links with many events involving local churches.
