Background:

Situated in a quiet, attractive village two miles north west of Newbury, the school's catchment area includes the villages of Stockcross and Boxford and surrounding hamlets. A programme of refurbishment and enlargement is now reaching completion and this will enable the school to offer a new hall, ICT suite, additional classroom and a library. The school is preparing to launch its new ICT suite for family and community use. The suite is networked and equipped with hardware donated by local company Vodaphone AirTouch, and organised by the local Education Business Partnesrhip as part of the Lifelong Learning Initiative. Internet links to Newbury College and wider educational providers will also be avaliable. The school also offers 'extensive' grounds incorporating a games field including rounders and football pitches, a newly refurbished adventure playground, netball court, playground and almost an acre of conservation area. The school maintains close links with the church (Oxford Diocese). Links with the community are also 'strong', and parents, governors and members of the community 'regularly help in the school and contribute in many ways to school life'. As part of a federation of small schools, Stockcross takes part in a biennial drama production at th local Watermill Theatre. It is proud of its fundraising achievements and normally has one charity event each term, while older children sponsor the education of a child in Israel. The school also has 'strong musical traditions' and many children learn the guitar, violin and recorder. This year, pupils reached the finals of the Millennium 'Voice of Promise' competition. The Crocodile Club provides care for children from 3.15pm to 5.15pm. The school was awarded the Charter Mark in 2000 and the DfEE Excellence Award in 2001. It is over-subscribed, receiving two applications for each place.
