Background:

The school, founded in 1962, serves the 'close-knit' community of Tilehurst on the outskirts of Reading. The close ties with the community mean that there is 'mutual support' of the children's learning between staff and parents. Money has been raised to improve the children's environment, in particular the playground and outdoor facilities. The school is over-subscribed, with around 25 per cent more applications than places. The school aims 'to enable children to do their best, by building on previously gained experience, knowledge and skills'. The school has set literacy and numeracy hours every day and it is considered to be 'vital' that children read regularly at home. 'Children with special needs are identified as early as possible and monitored carefully.' There are a range of clubs, including football, choir, art, netball, information technology, and recorder. One pupil recently came first in an art competition, winning two new computers for the school. Churchend School aims to enable children to do their best, by building on previously gained experience, knowledge and skills and to encourage children's confidence by celebrating their achievements and strengths, while identifying and addressing areas for development.
