Background:

Finchampsted School was maintained by the Rector in a cottage in the churchyard until 1858 when John Walter, then proprietor of The Times, provided a new building, which stands in its own grounds opposite Memorial Park in the middle of the village. It was modernised in 1961 and further extensions were completed in 1970 and 1985. It now provides four classrooms and is networked with 21 computers, some of which are located in the computer suite and the newly-built library. Religious education is taught in addition to the National Curriculum, and the school has close links with St James Church. Support is available for children with academic, physical, emotional or social difficultires. Sports on offer include gymnastics, athletics, dance, football, netball and swimming, and the school competes with other local schools. An emphasis on music means that recorder, guitar and brass tuition is offered to all pupils. There are good links with the local pre-school and the after-school club. Pupils invite local pensioners to events and raise funds for charities.
