Background:
Opened in 1957, the school is housed in modern buildings in the Oxfordshire village of Sonning Common, six miles north of Reading, with views of open countryside. Facilities include an audio-visual theatre, five technology rooms, purpose-built library, creative arts and science laboratories, music block, large sports hall, gymnasium and hall. The school is proud of its sporting achievements, particularly in swimming and tennis. The school were national synchro-swimming champions in 1992, the under-15 boys' tennis champions for the south of England in 1995 and has achieved the 'best overall GCSE results in Oxfordshire over the past three years'. It is also proud of its music and creative arts departments. Extra-curricular activities include textiles, photography and robotics, school orchestra, steel band, barber-shop groups, chess club and an annual public-speaking competition, while exchanges with France, Germany, America and Burkina Faso are arranged. It also offers special needs support. The school has been over-subscribed for the last two years.
