Background:

Founded in 1903 as a secondary school, Cookham Rise became a primary in the 1960s. With this change came modifications to the building and new infant classrooms and a spacious hall were built. In August 1999, the Key Stage 2 classrooms were rebuilt and an IT suite was added. Cookham Rise is 'very much a village school, with a wide mix of parents and pupils' and a 'very active' Parent Teacher Association. This 'increasingly popular' school has started to receive 'significant numbers' of applications from parents in Maidenhead and Bourne End. It is oversubscribed. A specialist music teacher is employed three days a week to support the 'strong musical tradition' with every pupil singing in a choir, playing the recroder, writing their own compositions and by Year 6 reading music. Tuition after school includes brass, woodwind and string instruments. Sporting interests are channeled into a number of curricular and extra-curricular activities. In addition to games lessons and 10 weeks of swimming per year, pupils can choose to attend after-school netball, tag rugby and football in the winter, and althetics, unihoc, short tennis or cricket in the summer. The netball team won its section of the league in 1998 and 1999 and the boys' football team were runners-up in 1999. Cookham Rise's pupils raise money for charity and in 1999 supported efforts to provide housing in Chilean shanty towns.
