Background:

Rivermead Primary was formerly used as a secondary school and the buildings were specially adapted as a 'large open-plan' primary school in 1972. Situated in the residential area of Woodley, the school is 'proud' of its open-plan nature and the fact that its 'team teaching and flexible learning' approach is 'different' from most other primary schools. Teachers share their 'strengths and skills', and their teaching is based on 'carefully planned' and cross-curricular work with integration of subjects 'whenever possible'. The school buildings provide a 'safe and secure' learning environment with a well-stocked library. The site includes 'extensive' field facilities with hard and soft playing areas for sports like competitive netball and football. Extra-curricular activities include drama, guitar groups, badminton and cycling proficiency (in Year 6). The school has 'good' relationships with parents and the local community, and this is maintained by pupil participation in the local carnival, work experience and parish activities. The school has a 'strong' ethos and philosophy based around 'child-centred' learning and care. Rivermead aims to prepare pupils for the 'responsibilities and opportunities that arise throughout life in a multi-cultural and technological society'.
