Background:

Winnersh Primary was originally built in January 1971 to cater for children on the north side of the village. There has been a steady increase in the number of pupils on the roll, and the buildings have grown to accommodate this. There is also a pre-school and a scout hut within the grounds. The catchment area consists mainly of private developments in which both parents work, and approximately 11% of children come from local authority housing. The school is housed in an open-plan building which has been modified to create more formal teaching areas. It has six classrooms, hall, library, three smaller rooms and an administration block. Temporary buildings are situated on the far side of the playground, one of which houses a new ICT suite. There is an open courtyard between the infant school and junior school which has recently been turned into an attractive area with raised flower beds. There are two school fields, one of which is separated from the main site by a gate. Since 1995, the school has phased in setting in English and maths from Year 2 through to Year 6. The school aims to provide a broad-based balanced curriculum 'relevant to the individual needs of the children', and this is based on the core and foundatrion subjects of the national curriculum. The school is 'well supported' by parents, some of whom come into the classrooms to assist. There is also a 'thriving' parent-teacher association which organises a number of fund-raising and social events throughout the year. The school also has links with the local church and the vicar takes an assembly once a fortnight. The school offers 'wide range' of extra-curricular activites which include netball, football, biology, cross-county, athletics, dance, gymnastics, cricket, orchestra, choir and book club. Children in Year 6 are given the opportunity of a residential trip to the Lake District.
